of SNV Timer
This application runs on Windows
98 / 98SE / Me / 2000 / XP
1. Overview
SNV
Timer is an application, which combines advanced
analog Alarm Clock and countdown
Timer that can work separately. In the alarm
mode, you can specify an actuation date and time.
In the timer mode, you can specify a number of days,
hours, minutes, or seconds on the expiry of that the chosen tasks
run. The actuation time and number of days / hours
/ minutes / seconds can easily be set by simple rotation of
the corresponding arrows with mouse. Also, these values can be
specified in the corresponding settings window, or with keyboard. In
addition, in the alarm mode, you are able to specify how
often the tasks run: daily, in the chosen days of
the week, monthly, or yearly. In the timer mode,
you are able to specify a number of executions and a time
unit. As in the alarm mode as in the timer
mode, the actuation date and time are
saved after exiting SNV Timer (note that after manual changing the
current system time, the Timer actuation time
may need to be corrected!).
2.
Actions
The
Alarm and Timer actions are specified in
the Alarm Settings and Timer Settings
windows that can be opened by clicking the corresponding Advanced
button. SNV Timer can use seven actions:
showing a customizable message box, playing an
audio file or a voice alert, showing a
picture / video file, opening an external application
/ folder / file / web page ( URL ), a COM port command, a
modem command, power control.

Showing a Message Box
You
can choose an usual message box ( in the center of the
screen ) or compact one ( at the bottom right ). The length of the
message box must be less than or equal to 350 characters. The
specified message box is always shown on top most. Also, you can
specify any text files with random selection of text strings from
ones. It may be the collections of proverbs, quotations, etc. For
advanced users: To make the text files with random selection of text
strings, you should apply the following rules:
The file must be in simple text (TXT) format
Each line of the file must contain one complete sentence without line
feeds
The word Random must be in the beginning of the file You can open an
usual message box with the Windows command line. Using the command
line, you can open the customizable SNV Timer message boxes with other
applications.
2.
Playing an Audio File
All
the basic sound formats are supported. If a folder is
specified, any audio files are randomly selected
from one ( by WAV, MID, MP3, WMA filename extensions ).
Also, you can make your own voice alerts with
microphone.

Showing a Picture / Video File
The
JPG, BMP, GIF, WMF picture formats and all the basic
video formats are supported. If a folder is specified, any pictures
and/or video files are randomly selected from one ( by AVI, MPE,
MPG, MPEG, JPG, JPEG, JPE, BMP, GIF, WMF filename extensions).
The selected file is always displayed in full-screen mode.
4.
Opening an External Application / Folder / File / Web Page
If
an external application is specified, its start folder must match the
folder where its executable file ( i.e. the file with EXE, COM,
or BAT filename extension ) is located. Other files are opened
with their associated applications (for example, the command http://www.microsoft.com
runs the default web browser and opens the web site www.microsoft.com).
The files with unregistered file types are not opened.
5.
COM Port Command
This
command is the specific text string that is sent to the selected COM
port to control the external devices attached to your
computer ( for example, it may be some domestic electronic
devices ).

Modem Command
This
command is the specific AT command that controls the modem attached to
the COM port ( for example, the command atdt 765-4123 calls the
phone number 765-4123).
7.
Power Control
Four
power control commands can be used: turn of computer,
reboot or restart computer, log off computer, start
screen saver. The confirm message box can be displayed before
the execution of any power control command. The above-named actions
can be set in any combination. If they are chosen simultaneously, they
always run in the order 2, 5, 4, 3, 6, 1, 7. To run ( at SNV Timer
startup ) the chosen tasks, that were overdue while SNV Timer was
inactive, use the Execute Overdue Tasks command.
3.
Additional Features
SNV
Timer includes the additional applications Calendar and Notepad.
Calendar
This
is a month calendar with the following abilities:
copying the selected date to the clipboard, calculating the difference
between the current date and selected one, opening on top
most. You are able to open any number of instances of Calendar
simultaneously.
Notepad
This
is a simple text editor with the ability to read, edit,
and print any simple text files ( .TXT and .RTF
or TXT and RTF ). This Notepad has the
following abilities: specifying the color of text and background,
locking the note text ( to prevent any accidental damages ), opening
on top most, using as the system default editor for
any text ( .TXT or TXT ) files ( to use the most of the
above-named abilities, you should maximize Notepad ).
You are able to open any number of instances of Notepad
simultaneously.
A
wide variety of means are available to modify the appearance
of SNV Timer and its additional applications. Use the
View menu item of the Main window menu to open the View Settings
window. In this window, you can change the colors, fonts,
background pictures, size, shape, speed of appearing /
disappearing, and other properties of the most of the SNV
Timer’s windows, message boxes, and tool tips
( some features are unavailable in Windows 98 / 98SE / Me). In order
to run SNV Timer on Windows startup, use the Autostart menu item of
the SNV Timer’s taskbar menu ( to open this menu,
right-click the SNV Timer icon. This icon is usually located in the system
tray at the bottom right of your screen ). The Autostart
command is valid for all the user accounts which are registered in
your system. In order to create the additional instances of SNV
Timer, use the New Instance menu item of the SNV Timer’s
taskbar menu. Every instance can have its own tasks and
appearance / skin. You can see the list of all the SNV Timer’s
instances by using the Show List menu item. To remove the current
active instance of SNV Timer, use the Remove Current
menu item.
4.
Registration
SNV
Timer is ShareWare, which means that you can use
it legally for 30 days free of charge to evaluate it. If during, or at
the end of, that period you decide that you would like to continue
using it, you should register your copy at the technical support web
site www.snvtimer.com. An unregistered copy
periodically shows the reminder popup window. Registration
allows you to get priority when contacting Technical Support for
feature requests, and all the future versions of SNV Timer
with no fees.
